This Week on Marvel Unlimited: 07/29/2020

After a pretty big week of books, Marvel originally drops 3 this week, then adds another 7 while I’m writing this up. What should have been an easy reading week is ending up to match last week. I’ve got a recap of all 11 books from last week, and there was some really good stuff.

New This Week
Amazing Spider-Man #45
Cable #2
Captain Marvel #18
Empyre #3
Empyre: Captain America #1
Spider-Man Noir #2
Star Wars: Darth Vader #3
Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #5
X-Factor #1
X-Men #10

Notes: Empyre reading order for this week: X-Men #10, Captain Marvel #18, Empyre: Captain America #1, Empyre #3 (Empyre: X-Men should be after Captain America and the unreleased Lords of Empyre: Celestial Messiah should be before Empyre #3)…Symbiote Spider-Man is the final issue of this mini-series…X-Factor looks likes it’ll be dealing with mutant resurrections, something they haven’t touched on a whole lot yet…Amazing Spider-Man formally starts the Sins Rising story arc…

Best of the Week
Amazing Spider-Man: Sins Rising Prelude #1 – This sets up the next big story arc of Spider-Man, and explains the backstory of Sin Eater. It was confusing because it was partially real, partially a delusion. In the end, it made perfect sense, but I wasn’t crazy about pulling it all together. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stick with this story in the long run.

Daredevil #21 – The battle in Hell’s Kitchen is over, and Daredevil is turning himself in for a murder he committed a few issues ago. On the way to the precinct, Foggy stops him and convinces him to only turn himself in as Daredevil, using some legal precedences to protect his secret identity. The prosecutor agrees, as long as he knows who DD is. And he’s pissed because Matt used to work for him and he considered him a friend. It’s an interesting story.

Empyre #2
Empyre: Avengers #1
Empyre: X-Men #1
Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling #1 – Let’s lump everything together again. Empyre is quickly losing me. It’s less about the Kree/Skrull Empire and more about the Cotati taking over the universe. The Cotati take out the Kree/Skrull armada quickly and the Avengers are left to defend the Earth from the battle. It’s all hands on deck. The X-Men book has Scarlet Witch trying to find a way to fix her “no more mutant” mistake; she goes to Genosha and ends up resurrecting Zombie Mutnats. At the same time, the X-Men find out there is an issue with the Krakoan portal at Genosha. A group of mutants go to investigate and find zombies, Kree, Skrulls, and Cotati all there. Emperor Hulking might be the best of this bunch, as it looks at Hulking’s journey to leading the Kree/Skrull Empire; this includes the Kree/Skrulls disapproving of his relationship with Wiccan.

Hellions #2 – Sinister’s cleanup crew is headed to one of Sinister’s old labs where he has clones of the original Marauders that need to be taken off the board. And everything goes wrong, which is to be expected when you take the bad kids of Krakoa (and Pyslocke and Havok) to reform them. Empath is playing with his teammates psyches, Wild Child isn’t taking his meds, and Scalphunter has to deal with clones of his former teammates. It culminates with Madeline Prior pulling the strings of the Clones. I like the chaos of this book and am expecting it to be a favorite in the long run.

New Mutants #11 – The New Mutants end their attempt to help an out of control mutant while keeping the government from killing all of the mutants involved. This might have been one of the weakest arcs of the series. There is such a wide cast of characters, especially is they continue to use the MLF members, that they could have a lot of crazy missions that the main X-Men don’t have time to handle.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #2 – Aphra and team find the site of their “treasure”, but someone she’s double crossed is waiting to swoop in. It’s been played out in Aphra, especially when 2 of her team have been swindled in the past. Aphra is a great character, but she needs some fresh storylines.

Wolverine #3 – Wolverine, with the help of Kid Omega, the Marauders, and CIA agent Jeff Bannister are working to take down the Flower Cartel and the Pale Girl. We’re not quite sure what the Pale Girl is, but she appears to have telepathy as she’s taken control of both Wolverine and Bannister in the series. Wolverine is best when he’s off on his own, and teaming with Bannister over mutants has made for an interesting story. I’m a fan of this book.

X-Men/Fantastic Four #4 – Now that we’re done, this stands as your prototypical superhero crossover: 2 groups meet, battle, teamup, resolve issues. This isn’t a bad thing, especially when done right; this one was done right. The X-Men/FF defeat Doom, rescue some mutants, and still don’t know how to fix Franklin’s powers. The FF reluctantly agree that Franklin can checkout Krakoa, while the X-Men determine they shouldn’t be so quick to disrupt the family dynamic that works for the FF.

Retro Review: None this week. I read 11 new books while trudging through Dune at the same time (I should be done this week).

Don’t forget, the Krakoa Mutant Tracker is updated weekly as new books come to Marvel Unlimited.
