News and Notes

  • Michael Helman has been claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates; both teams announced the move, although it was never reported that the Cardinals had designated him for assignment. Helman held the honor of being the lone Cardinal off-season transaction until the team signed Phil Maton. He struggled in Memphis to start the season and the Cardinals were willing to cut ties.

The Cardinals have roster depth already in Jose Barrero and Jose Fermin; while Helman appeared to have more upside, he didn’t perform to that level.

The 40-man roster now sits at 39 men. The salary matrix has been updated.
  • Sem Robberse will be out for a while; the righty had Tommy John surgery recently and won’t pitch again until the middle of next season. He’s been placed on the Minor League full season IL. Robberse, acquired from the Blue Jays for Jordan Hicks, had a 7.34 ERA in 4 starts at Memphis. He’s probably out of the teams plans until 2027.
  • Matt Carpenter, who was the key “clubhouse acquisition” last off-season, formally announced his retirement on former Cardinal Scott Linebrink‘s podcast. The Cardinals 13th round pick in the 2009 Draft, Carpenter spent 10 of his 14 year career with the team, including last seasons reunion. While the end of the initial stint and last season weren’t great, he had a good overall career with the Cards and will probably end up with a Red Jacket in a few years.
  • Former Cardinal and current Brewer Jose Quintana is on the IL with a left shoulder impingement; it’s unknown how long he’ll be out for. If it’s a lengthy IL stay, the team probably won’t have to face him in June (12-15) when the team travels to Milwaukee.

That’s it for today. Check back tomorrow.
