As mentioned above, if you aren’t reading the Absolute line of comics, you really need to. The original 3 (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) are all great takes on the characters. The Flash is having a strong start, while I haven’t gotten to Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter yet.
The key is to remember that Darkseid removed the elements of this universe that made the heroes who they were. Batman didn’t have both parent murdered and they didn’t have a fortune. Superman grew up on Krypton until his teenage years and only had a small period in Smallville with the Kents. Wonder Woman didn’t have the Amazons to teach her.
As a result, we get fresh stories with characters we kind of know rather than a rehash of previous stories, something that has made me bored with the regular lines of DC Comics (it’s the same way with Marvel and the Ultimate Universe). There are still some good books out there, but the Absolute books are usually the first I read when I get my pull and hold or open the app on Wednesdays.
Of the Absolute books, Superman is my favorite; I’m not usually a Superman reader, but I took to this story right away. I purchase the physical book. Batman is second; it’s a radical take on the character and it took me a few issues to start to get it. Wonder Woman is third, but I can’t say it’s because it’s bad; rather it shows why Diana is the perfect middle between Superman and Batman. Flash is the last of what I’ve read, but it’s only had 1 issue so far, rather than full arcs like the first 3.
