Cardinals Sign Outfielder Corey Dickerson
LEFT-HANDED HITTING VETERAN HAS BEEN ALL-STAR & GOLD GLOVER DURING 9-YEAR CAREER
ST. LOUIS, MO., March 18, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed free-agent outfielder Corey Dickerson to a one-year contract for the 2022 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Dickerson, 32, has played for Colorado (2013-15), Tampa (2016-17), Pittsburgh (2018-19), Philadelphia (2019), Miami (2020-21), and Toronto (2021) during his nine-year career.
The left-handed-hitting Dickerson batted a combined .271 (91-336) with 18 doubles, six home runs and 29 RBI in 109 games between Miami and Toronto last season. He has slashed .283/.327/.488 with 128 home runs, 376 extra-base hits and 416 RBI in 937 career games.
Dickerson owns a .845 OPS against right-handed pitching over his career and was named an All-Star in 2017 while playing for Tampa Bay. He won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2018 with Pittsburgh as the best defensive left fielder in the National League, finishing the season with 16 Defensive Runs Saved and 10 Outs Above Average.
Dickerson will wear uniform No. 25.

The signings is official, and I don’t think it’s a bad signing. Dickerson will give them more options at DH and the outfield; he’s also a left-handed bat, which is something the team needs.
I also think this is a sign a trade is coming. The Cardinals have been in talks with the A’s about pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas; first basemen Juan Yepez and Luken Baker and outfielders Lars Nootbaar and Alec Burleson have all been rumored to be involved in some capacity. Dickerson would replace Yepez or Nootbaar on the active roster if a deal were to be made.
This signing also rules out the possibility of bringing back Albert Pujols. Dickerson brings more positional versatility then Pujols, who would be limited to part time DH duties and the occasional start at first base. I’m indifferent on Pujols; it would be a nice story for his career to end with the Cardinals, but I also think he’d be a waste of a roster spot.
