I’ve heard a lot of good things about Main & Mill Brewing Co., but haven’t had a chance to try anything. Well, this is my chance (sorry, not sorry). I’d seen Rocco Gets His Chance on various St. Louis Beer Facebook Groups and was drawn into the can. Luckily, I was able to get ahold of a can.
ABV: 6%
IBU:
Style: IPA – New England
Brewery Description: A super fresh, hazy, Mario themed IPA, Rocco Gets His Chance is a 6% Hazy IPA with Hallertau Blanc, Nelson Sauvin, and Simcoe hops giving notes of grapes, light pine and pineapple.
I received a can from a buddy. It was available at the brewery and some STL bottle shops. It’s not listed on M&M’s website at this point and I don’t know if shops still have it.
Appearance: It poured a dark orange, almost copper, into my pint glass. Not super hazy and darker than many other hazy IPAs. There was about a half inch of head, with little retention or lacing.
Smell: Most of the aroma is piney. I got hints of the grapes, but not much or the pineapple.
Taste: Unlike a lot of IPAs (hazy or west coast), this has more of a malt build and less on the hops. You get a lot of pine and a little of the fruit; again, more grapes than pineapple.
Mouth: Clean and crisp. Not very juicy, like a lot of hazy IPAs. The carbonation level was perfect.
Overall: It’s a well made beer, but doesn’t really fit the hazy IPA style. It was very easy drinking and something that would be pretty good for a pool day or after mowing.
Rating: 3.50 out of 5. A solid beer, but nothing I’d go out of my way for again. If the taste had more “juice” to it, I’d be all over more of it. +.50 for the can design though.
The average rating on BeerAdvocate is 3.75 (on 1 rating). The Untappd rating is 3.79 (140 check-ins).
