Golden Son by Pierce Brown: A Book Review
Golden Son, the second novel in Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, shifts from young adult tropes into a mature epic science fiction narrative. The story follows Darrow as he navigates shifting alliances, military campaigns, and complex political intrigue to overthrow a brutal society from within.

Golden Son by Pierce Brown Review
After enjoying Red Rising but finding its young adult elements occasionally distracting, I was thrilled to discover that Golden Son takes the series to a completely different level. Pierce Brown expands the world dramatically, raises the stakes, and delivers a relentless, action-packed story that never lets up.

Picking up after the events of Red Rising, Darrow is now fully entrenched in the brutal political and military struggles of the Society. What follows is a whirlwind of shifting alliances, betrayals, battles, and power plays as he attempts to bring down the system from within.
Unlike the first novel, which often felt like it was borrowing from familiar YA dystopian tropes, Golden Son fully embraces its identity as an epic science fiction saga. I get that Brown needed Red Rising to be published so he could do the full series, and making it feel more YA was an avenue to do this; I was relieved to find a more “adult” book with the sequel.
The biggest improvement over Red Rising is the tone. The young adult feel of the first book is almost completely gone, replaced by a more mature and ambitious story. The political intrigue, military campaigns, and strategic maneuvering make the universe feel much richer and more believable.
The pacing is another major strength. Golden Son rarely slows down, delivering one memorable sequence after another. Whether it’s space combat, duels, or shocking betrayals, the book constantly raises the stakes and keeps the reader engaged.
Pierce Brown also does an excellent job developing both Darrow and the supporting cast. Relationships become more complicated, loyalties are tested, and nearly every character has something significant at stake.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its ability to surprise. Just when it seems like Darrow has secured an advantage, Brown pulls the rug out from under both the characters and the reader. The twists feel earned rather than forced, making the story even more compelling.
Final Rating: 5/5
Golden Son is everything I hoped the sequel would be. It takes the foundation built in Red Rising and elevates it in nearly every way. The YA elements that occasionally held back the first book are largely gone, replaced by a fast-paced, action-packed science fiction epic filled with political intrigue and unforgettable twists.
