THE CARDINALS TO COMMEMORATE JACKIE ROBINSON DAY ON APRIL 15
Players & Coaches to Continue Tradition of Wearing “42” Jersey Numbers; Club To Offer 42% Discount on Museum Admission to Honor Civil Rights Icon’s Legacy
ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 14, 2023 – In conjunction with Major League Baseball’s league-wide celebration commemorating the legacy of Jackie Robinson and the 50th anniversary of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, the St. Louis Cardinals have announced ways the team will honor Robinson and his legacy during Saturday’s game vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium. The organization has also partnered with Harris-Stowe State University and area libraries to share the impact of Robinson’s legacy.

‘42’ JERSEYS – As is tradition, players, managers and coaches will once again wear Robinson’s iconic number on April 15th, with all teams using Dodger blue “42” jersey numbers. A team-signed Cardinals “42” home jersey will be auctioned off by Major League Baseball to raise money for the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
- Players, coaches, managers, and umpires will have New Era caps with a “42” side patch. Nike Breaking Barriers t-shirts also will be worn during batting practice.
- Commemorative base jewels and lineup cards will be used for the game.
- Stance socks with commemorative “42” logo, as well as other Jackie Robinson products will be available for purchase in the Busch Stadium Team Store.
PREGAME CEREMONIES –
- Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholar Jacob Dodd, a senior majoring in Computer Science, Economics and Finance at Washington University will be recognized and will throw out a ceremonial pitch.
- Team sponsor, CommunityAmerica will present a check to the Jackie Robinson Foundation and Cardinals Care to further their missions. Jacob Dodd will accept the donation on behalf of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and Michael Hall, Vice President, Community Relations & Executive Director, Cards Care will accept for Cards Care.
- Harris-Stowe State University Softball players and coaches will be attending the game and starter Zaria Palmer and head coach Larry Young will represent Harris-Stowe and the strong partnership between the Cardinals and the University.
- Cardinals broadcaster Mike Claiborne, who was featured in the History Channel documentary After Jackie, will be recognized.
PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY – 25,000 fans, ages 16 & over, will receive a cap saluting the career of Jackie Robinson.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES – From the time gates open, until one-hour into the game, fans will be able to stop by the Jackie Robinson Day tent in Ford Plaza to complete Jackie Robinson Day activities – word scramble, word search, writing prompt and create your own jersey courtesy of MLB.
SCOREBOARD RECOGNITION – Clips of the documentary After Jackie, courtesy of the History Channel, featuring Cardinals will be shown in-game.
HARRIS-STOWE STATE UNIVERSITY– On April 15, when the Harris-Stowe State University Baseball team hosts Hannibal-LaGrange University, both teams will wear the Cardinals hat saluting the career of Jackie Robinson. Harris-Stowe’s baseball and softball fields were refurbished and built with a $1.2 million investment from the Cardinals and Cards Care and opened in 2021. The fields sit on the site of the former Stars Park where the St. Louis Stars Negro League team played.
CARDINALS HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM – The Cardinals will offer a 42% discount on future museum admission tickets purchased during Jackie Robinson Day weekend (April 15, 2023 at 12:01am through April 16, 2023 at 11:59pm). Fans can use coupon code JACKIEDAY to purchase museum admission for $7 dated April 17, 2023 or later. The Cards Museum has many artifacts on display that highlight the St. Louis Stars and the origins of Black baseball in St. Louis. Fans are encouraged to explore the display that tells the stories of Black St. Louisans that have been playing baseball in St. Louis since the 1800s.
LIBRARY READING LIST – The Cardinals have teamed up with the St. Louis Public Library and St. Louis County Library branches to create a list of recommended books available for fans of all ages focused on Jackie Robinson’s impact and the history of the Negro Leagues.
