“Pop music thrives on unlikely juxtapositions. But after a half-century of fusions, cross-cultural experiments, and sonic-alchemical explosions, you may have concluded that everything had been covered. Well, Josie Cotton is here to prove otherwise.” – Skope Magazine

MARCH 21, 2023 [Los Angeles, CA] — “This was one of those songs where I picked up the guitar and it just kind of happened,” says infamous New Wave icon JOSIE COTTON about her new single “DISCO BALL” taken from her upcoming album DAY OF THE GUN out May 2, 2023 on Kitten Robot Records. She says the song came about when producer and mixer Paul Roessler (TSOL, The Screamers, Nina Hagan), was very curious about what she was working on for the new album.

Reluctantly, she pressed PLAY on her phone, and he managed to convince her to leave it intact as he loved its rawness. “This seemed like madness to me but that’s exactly what I ended up doing,” she recalls. She details the speedy, subconscious writing process is like being a stenographer on a train. “You just take note of what you hear. It’s extremely interesting to see what crawls out.”

Recorded over a four-year time frame at Kitten Robot Studios, Day of the Gun was produced and mixed by Josie and Roessler and features guest appearances by Kevin Preston (Long Shot, Prima Donna), Eddie Spaghetti (Supersuckers), Clem Burke (Blondie), and Lee Rocker (Stray Cats).

For the album writing process, she drew from multiple sources of influence. The dark humor of her song “Painting In Blood” came from her adoration of Italian composer and conductor Ennio Morricone and the ’70s Giallo and Spaghetti Western films he scored. While the lyrics for her previous single “Cold War Spy” were inspired by John le Carré spy novels, James Bond and intensive research on the Cold War. Proving that her inspiration can come from anywhere, “The Fathomless Tale of Silky and Sam” came from a dream about a spider.
