Rock, Punk & Unfinished Business: Quiz Show Enters a New Chapter With “XONO”
There’s a particular kind of confidence that comes from a band with nothing left to prove. Quiz Show’s “XONO” has that quality. It is fast, noisy, melodic and slightly unruly—a compact piece of post-punk/alternative rock that turns the failure of a relationship into three minutes of nervous energy and sharp hooks.
The New Jersey trio—Chris Matthews, a founding member of Washington, D.C. hardcore veterans Shudder To Think, bassist Jesse Krakow and drummer Joe Billy III—sounds like a band fully aware of its musical history without being overly concerned with recreating it. The reference points are easy enough to spot: Hüsker Dü’s melodic abrasion, the Pixies’ tension, Fugazi’s rhythmic force, Sonic Youth’s dissonance and the Ramones’ economy.
There are also traces of Jawbox, Girls Against Boys and Pavement in the way melody and rough-edged guitars coexist. But “XONO” isn’t nostalgia. It has the nervous immediacy of a band playing in the present.
The song opens with an unexpected encounter and quickly establishes its central tension: the hope that something might develop versus the dawning realization that it won’t. The arrangement follows that emotional arc without spelling it out. Guitars grind and accumulate, the drums and bass keep everything moving, and the chorus provides just enough melodic lift before the song starts pulling the rug away.
What makes it work is the balance between sweetness and abrasion. There are genuinely catchy passages here, but Quiz Show never smooths away the rough edges. Pleasant dissonance keeps creeping into the melody, and the guitars give the song a physical weight that prevents it from becoming conventional indie-pop. By the bridge, the possibility of the relationship has effectively disappeared, and the track drives toward its conclusion with increasing intensity before leaving behind a final, unresolved echo.
That ending is important. “XONO” isn’t really a breakup song in the conventional sense. It’s about recognition—the moment when optimism gives way to an unavoidable truth. The music captures that shift better than a more polished production ever could.

There is considerable history behind this relatively new band. Quiz Show emerged after Matthews returned to songwriting following a roughly 25-year break, prompted in part by reconnecting with former Shudder To Think drummer Kevin March. Both were living in Montclair, New Jersey, where the idea for Quiz Show developed. March’s subsequent departure from the group eventually led to Joe Billy III taking over drums, with Krakow on bass.
That backstory matters because Quiz Show doesn’t sound like a veteran musician attempting to relive his youth. If anything, “XONO” sounds liberated from that expectation. There is an appealing lack of fussiness to the performance. The playing is tight, but the song still feels like it could come apart at any moment.
Producer Ray Ketchem, who has worked with Guided By Voices, Luna, Elk City and The Dambuilders, recorded, mixed and mastered the track at Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair. The production gives the instruments enough separation to reveal the song’s details without sacrificing its density. The guitars remain abrasive, the rhythm section hits hard, and the vocals sit naturally inside the arrangement rather than being polished into the foreground.
“XONO” is the third release from Quiz Show, following the band’s 2023 self-titled album and 2024’s “Flotsam” EP. Those records established an interest in protest, friendship, frustration and the damaged stories people carry with them. The new single moves that focus into more intimate territory, but the same restless spirit remains.
Without retro posturing, Quiz Show uses its punk and alternative influences as ingredients rather than costumes, balancing hooks that stick with enough abrasion to keep things interesting. “XONO” is a strong introduction to the forthcoming three-song EP on Magic Door Record Label, suggesting a band still finding its shape—and benefiting from not trying to fit neatly into any particular scene or era.
“XONO” arrives September 1, with the full three-song EP following September 28 and already available for pre-order on Bandcamp. The best way to hear where Quiz Show goes from here may be to catch them in a room: they return to the stage October 2, from 8–11 p.m., at Crossroads in Garwood, New Jersey, opening for The Van Pelt’s record-release show. After the contained tension of “XONO,” it should be interesting to hear what happens when that energy is turned loose live.
