Nintendo’s New Alarmo Is An Overpriced Toy

On October ninth 2024 Nintendo announced its newest hardware. No it’s not the switch two like we had all hoped, it’s Nintendo Alarmo, a one-hundred dollar alarm clock that plays Nintendo music. The reason for this alarm clock being so expensive is pretty clear if you look a little further, although that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous. The most likely reason for the price is all of the expensive (And unnecessary) things packed into it. What other alarm clock do you know that can track your movements and download sounds from the internet. I feel like the primary demographic for this alarm clock is kids, kids who want to wake up to Mario or Zelda.

Nintendo And Weird Products

Nintendo has a track record of being weird, we know this, but Alarmo might just take the cake. After all it can’t do anything a phone can’t do, and most of us have phones near us when we go to bed. Like I said before I think Nintendo wants to market Alarmo to kids, but I don’t think enough kids want (Or rather enough kids with that much money) Nintendo Alarmo. I think the real demographic is people who have been playing Nintendo games their whole lives and are now 20-40 sometimes older. The problem with this is that Nintendo Alarmo, in my experience, simply does not appeal to a forty-five year old man.

Nintendo has a history of making weird products and then throwing them by the wayside a few years later. For example, they once made a cardboard game (Nintendo Labo) and used it to dip their toes into building a VR platform. That was actually pretty cool for what it was but, just like Alarmo it was very expensive, about sixty dollars for one of four kits. (Kit one being required) This comes out to three two hundred and forty dollars plus tax, and after kit number four they abandoned it to move on to the next idea. My point is, how long before this is obsolete and nobody cares anymore.

Good Stuff

On to things I actually like about Nintendo Alarmo. Firstly I can’t say for certain because I don’t have the actual product to test and review, but it seems like Nintendo Alarmo actually has descent build quality. Another thing is, despite the fact that it is unnecessary, downloading new alarm “themes” via wifi is actually an interesting idea.

Conclusion

End of the day, I don’t think I can recommend buying Nintendo Alarmo unless you; A. Have enough money that you can justify the purchase of a one hundred dollar alarm clock, AND B. Don’t sleep with another person, because it remains to be seen how well it will work with more than one person.
