Is The Switch 2 Actually Worth It In The Current Economy?

Honestly…

No. That’s the answer, end of story. Especially if you already have a Switch 1, a Switch 2 is not worth it, yet. Now that we have that out of the way, is it worth looking into for you? Probably not, but that answer is a bit more nuanced and I thought I’d give my two cent’s, as I have had people in my real life ask this very question.

It’s Worth It If…

The Switch 2 should most appeal to people who do not have a Switch. The reason being if you (Somehow) missed out on the first Switch, there is now another option that is better spec’d and that ecosystem has a ton of exclusive first and third party games.

Another possible reason is if your switch is broke. Nintendo’s customer service is not the worst, but if you are not inside of warranty and your switch is broken (My heart goes out to al lost save data’s, gone but not forgotten) you might be looking at a totally new switch, in witch case, I could see a Switch 2 being worth the $449.99 – $549.99 USD (Depending on timing, retailer and version)

Other than these two reasons, I cannot really see a point in buying the Switch 2 yet.

Why It’s Not Worth It…

Money. That is the simplest reason. Due to the state of the world right now. Money is tight for MOST people. Therefore MOST people cannot (or should not) justify an expensive new toy, that acts similarly to one they might already have and could get for significantly cheaper.

The used resale market for switches is great. You can get a used switch lite on Ebay for MAX 175 USD (You’ll see higher but shouldn’t look at anything higher than that. OLED, same deal MAX 250 (which is actually a better deal) if you want to get into the switch ecosystem but don’t care about the new games that are starting to come out (almost none of which are from Nintendo) Get a switch off of your marketplace of choice.

Another, More Hidden Cost

The games are always another cost, over a hundred bucks for for 2 games has been the norm for a while now, but things are changing. seventy dollars is becoming the norm and Nintendo now has two eighty dollar games meaning games have potentially gotten 30% more expensive. I’m not one who thinks that increasing games prices are the worst thing on the planet, but they are another cost you should know about.

Conclusion

End of the day, only you can decide if the Switch 2 is worth it. For me, it currently is, but I think most people should probably wait.
