Benny J. Ward album cover

As the announcement of the worldwide release of Rinehearts‘ forthcoming Dom Mariani-produced album approaches, Rinehearts‘ mainman Benny J Ward can’t contain himself. With his 4th solo single in about as many months, Benny has found the perfect combo of punk/garage energy and blazing 1979 power pop hookery, and you’re gonna wanna keep it on repeat!

“I DIDN’T MEAN IT” is out now on Cheersquad Records & Tapes. A flurry of garage excitement! Once again Benny makes his way into your ear canal, sets up camp and never leaves…

This one comes in at a length of 1 minute and 47 seconds and does exactly what it needs to do. Get up and git git git down! Benny’s last three singles have all had the own unique flavour, this little gem however, is the right/left hook we never knew we needed!

Benny J Ward - I Didn't Mean It
Benny J. Ward

With a career that spans 20 years, half a dozen bands, a dozen albums, EPs, and singles; it would be safe to assume that Benny J Ward has scratched all his musical itches. Safe… but wrong. While his masterful power pop band Rinehearts were working in the studio with producer Dom Mariani on a new album, Benny J took time to hunker down in the studio he built with his bare hands and produce a string of solo gems under his own name.

As with almost all of Benny J’s work, these solo tracks, which are being released as a run of digital solo singles, each has at its core of a super-catchy pop song, but with layers of delicious weirdness on top. Melodic hooks come thick and fast, drenched in peculiar harmonies, tantalising guitar fuzz, and laid-back grooves. The end result is an irresistible swirling racket that finds its place in Benny J’s discography somewhere between the power pop mastery of Rinehearts, and the balls-out rock’n’roll of Screwtop Detonators.

This is not the first time Benny J has gone solo. Back in the early 2000s he caught the attention of Triple J with his Ginger-Pride-themed country-music alter-ego The Lone Ranga (subject matter that would later resurface in 5-piece alternative outfit The Red Panthers). These singles are, however, the first time Benny J has played every instrument on a track – from his native guitar to the bass and drums – as well as recording and mixing the tune himself.

A man of many talents (and voices) Benny J will continue his eye-watering level of prolificacy well into the foreseeable future, all while producing other incredible Perth bands such as Zerodent, Brackets and Desert Dogs as a side-hustle.
