Cardinals Announce Contract & Arbitration Details

CARDINALS ANNOUNCE CONTRACT & ARBITRATION DETAILS; TEAM AVOIDS ARBITRATION WITH FLAHERTY, GALLEGOS, HICKS, HUDSON & REYES

JUPITER, Fla., March 22, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they reached agreement on 2022 contracts with five of their seven salary arbitration eligible players and 20 of their 21 pre-arbitration players.

Pitchers Jack Flaherty, Giovanny Gallegos, Jordan Hicks, Dakota Hudson and Alex Reyes agreed to terms to avoid salary arbitration, while outfielders Harrison Bader and Tyler O’Neill did not.

Of the pre-arbitration players, those agreeing to terms were Genesis Cabrera, Brendan Donovan, Tommy Edman, Junior Fernandez, Ryan Helsley, Ivan Herrera, Andrew Knizner, Lars Nootbaar, Johan Oviedo, Freddy Pacheco, Johan Quezada, Angel Rondon, Ali Sanchez, Edmundo Sosa, Brandon Waddell, Jake Walsh, Kodi Whitley, Jake Woodford, Juan Yepez and T.J. Zeuch.

Outfielder Dylan Carlson had his contract renewed.

It’s good to see that Flaherty and the Cardinals didn’t go to a hearing again, but I still doubt the team would be able to sign him to a deal that buys out any free agency.

It’s also worth noting that the team renewed Carlson’s contract; this means, he didn’t agree to terms as a pre-arbitration player. Flaherty didn’t agree to terms at this point in his career too. I don’t think we should read into it yet, but it’s worth watching next years.

The amounts: Flaherty – $5M; Gallegos – $TBD; Hicks – $938k; Hudson – $1.05M; Reyes – $TBD.

All arbitration numbers have been added to both the Salary Matrix and the Transaction Tracker for the Cardinals.
