Nintendo Switch 2 Review

Preface:

I love my Nintendo Switch, yet by the end of its life, the original Switch had some problems. Many of you know about these: Joy-Con drift, bad graphics, poor performance. It seemed as though the Nintendo Switch was rife with a sorts of controversy throughout its latter years. That said, the Nintendo Switch still ended up being the third best-selling console of all time and beloved by many.

Personally, my Nintendo Switch has been largely unused since the 2020 Animal Crossing craze. A few games, however, have made me pick it up, like the epic Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Largely, though, it has become a mantle piece.

All of this is to say, when I heard about the Nintendo Switch 2, I was cautiously optimistic. Could they really recapture the magic of the original Switch, while having the power to play current-gen games? The answer is a little complicated. I would largely say no, although that does not mean I don’t like the Switch 2.

The General Improvements:

Let’s start with the straight-up improvements. The first and most obvious thing is the power, it is significantly better. Without getting into technical specs let me just say, breath of the wild has even better draw distance and detail, as well as significantly better load times. I personally don’t notice the better frame-rates but they are better.

Another place with obvious improvements is the Eshop. The Eshop on the original switch was horrible. With bad stuttering and load times. I dreaded going to the Eshop. That is no longer a problem. There is no stutter and load times are non-existent. Also it is red now, which makes more sense. Other than these things; the switch has better options an general load times are better.

My problems:

My main problem is the lack of games at launch. While I love the thing; if your a child who doesn’t like Mario Kart, your pretty much out of luck. On the topic of Mario Kart; (spoilers for my Mario Kart review) while it may be the best Mario Kart to date, (Sorry Double Dash, I still love you) it is NOT worth eighty US dollars. The main feature (The World mode) may be boring to some and the rest is basically Mario Kart.

Back to the Switch 2 itself. It’s a great console; I don’t care what anyone says. However, it is just not worth the 450 to 500 US dollars to play Mario Kart or Cyberpunk. My general rule is to make a list of games you want. Once that list reaches 4 to 5 games, you can buy the console. I am glad to have mine, but I do not recommend you buy it yet.

Final Thoughts:

The last thing I want to say is, while I don’t recommend you to buy a Switch 2; I do still think most people will have some fun if they do. I do, however, recommend the Mario Kart bundle if you decide to buy a Switch 2. End of the day I cannot tell you what to do, I can just tell you my recommendations.
