MASYN WINN & BRYCEN MAUTZ NAMED CARDINALS TOP MINOR LEAGUERS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY
Winn Led All Cardinals Minor Leaguers in HR, RBI, Runs, and Total Bases; Mautz Extended His Active Scoreless Inning Streak to 15.0 IP
ST. LOUIS, Mo., August 4, 2023 – The St. Louis Cardinals today announced their selections for Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for July, with Memphis Redbirds (AAA) shortstop Masyn Winn and Palm Beach (A) left-handed starter Brycen Mautz taking home the honors.
Winn, 21, slashed .359/.427/.750 for the month, leading all qualified Cardinals minor leaguers with a 1.177 OPS and topping all hitters with 8 HR, 26 RBI, 26 runs, 33 hits, 18 extra-base hits and 69 total bases. He reached safely in 20 of 21 games played with at least one plate appearance, which included an 11-game hit streak from July 8-25 that saw him hit .471 (24-for-51) with five three-hit contests during that span. It is Winn’s first career Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month award win, becoming the first Memphis middle infielder to be recognized since Breyvic Valera in August 2017.
“Masyn’s outstanding month included strong defensive play at SS and impressive offensive numbers, including eight home runs,” said Cardinals Assistant GM & Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.
The 54th overall selection in the 2020 MLB Draft opened the season as the youngest player at the Triple-A level, and is hitting .285/.357/.471 with 17 home runs, 15 doubles, six triples, 59 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a Triple-A leading 91 runs scored through 98 games. He has put together four separate hitting streaks of a least 10 games this year, with a career-high 16-game streak from May 23-June 9. The Kingwood, Texas native ranks as the club’s second-best prospect by Baseball America and was also named the International League’s Player of the Month for July.
Mautz, 22, posted a 2-1 record with a 2.05 ERA (5 ER/22.0 IP), 0.91 WHIP and a .141 average against across four starts in July. He tossed 6.0 no-hit innings in his most recent start on July 30 at Fort Myers to extend his scoreless inning streak to 15.0 and has not allowed more than five hits in any of his last five starts. The 6’4” San Diego, California native continues Palm Beach’s run of Pitcher of the Month winners, joining RHP Hancel Rincon (May 2023) and RHP Max Rajcic (June 2023). Palm Beach pitchers have taken home the award in six of the last seven months dating back to June 2022.
“Brycen earned Pitcher of the Month for July, pitching 22.0 innings across four starts with two quality starts and 23 strikeouts,” stated LaRocque.
Selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of San Diego, Mautz owns a 4-7 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 91 strikeouts across 85.1 innings pitched (18 starts). Ranked as the club’s 16th overall prospect by Baseball America, the southpaw has won two Florida State League Pitcher of the Week awards this season and ranks Top 3 among all qualified FSL pitchers in ERA, WHIP, average against and innings pitched.
