Cardinals Trim 7 From Spring Roster

CARDINALS TRIM SEVEN FROM SPRING ROSTER; 58 PLAYERS REMAIN IN MAJOR LEAGUE CAMP

JUPITER, Fla., March 4, 2023 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 58 players, with seven players optioned or assigned to minor league camp.

The team optioned pitchers Freddy Pacheco and Guillermo Zuniga to the Memphis (AAA) roster and re-assigned non-roster pitchers James Naile, Tommy Parsons and Kodi Whitley to minor league camp along with non-roster catchers Aaron Antonini and Jimmy Crooks.

Naile and Whitley are the bigger names here, but neither did enough to stay on the 40-man roster the past 2 seasons; they’ll be depth at Memphis this year. Pacheco and Zuniga will probably see promotions before the other 2 since they are still on the 40-man. Parsons still has some prospect shine to him, so we could see him back later in the year.

The catching depth in camp drops when pitchers are sent down. Antonini is system depth; the jury is still out on Crooks, since he’s only had 1 professional season so far.
