Bedroom Electronic Artist ANIMALWEAPON’s Release “Deserve” Ahead of New Album “Set of Constraints”

January 13, 2022 (Raleigh, NC) — After the release of his shimmering single “Deserve” towards the tail end of 2021, bedroom electronic artist ANIMALWEAPON (née Patrick Cortes) is now proud to premiere its accompanying introspective new video with Hollywood Life. In addition, Animalweapon have announced their new album Set Of Constraints will be released on April 15, 2022 via Polychromatic Records.
Directed, filmed, and produced by Polychromatic Records owner/founder Scot Dunlap, the video not only translates the song’s musings about depression/mental health struggles, it also serves as a love letter of sorts to Cortes’ home of Raleigh, NC with many of the city’s locations appearing in the video.
“Aunt Betty’s was a very special bar for me and I spent a lot of time there while I was going through a lot of personal stuff, so I wanted to start the video there,” he recalls about the location of the opening shot. Missing a potential love connection while deep in thought, Cortes meanders throughout Raleigh, contemplating his direction in life. A cameo is also made by by Raleigh artist MJ Burns, who is featured on several tracks off of Set Of Constraints. “The song has a note of isolation about it, and the concept behind the video was meant to be very simple,” says Cortes. Deeply appreciative to the bar for hosting him both in real life and in the video, he adds, “Special thanks overwhelmingly goes to the staff and Aunty Betty’s – Rey, Reese, Jake, and owners Greg Ewan and Niall Hanley.”
“When Patrick told me about his concept for the video for ‘Deserve,’ I wanted to explore this feeling of isolation and try to mold it into an abstract, visual narrative that was complementary to the music,” adds Dunlap, who in addition to running a record label, is also a filmmaker. “We collected footage over two days, playing with color and light and mixing in slow motion and experimental out of focus shots to illustrate the sultry melancholy feeling of the song.” In the video, several notable Raleigh landmarks can be seen including The Pour House Music Hall & Record Shop, House of Swank Clothing, the Historic City Market, Moore Square, and Memorial Auditorium.
In addition to Animalweapon, Cortes won a 2017 Webby Award for Best Sound Design/Original Music Score for his work on the hit podcast Undisclosed, which was the follow-up to the #1 iTunes media phenomenon Serial. He also composed the theme song for iHeartMedia’s The Hidden Djinn which reached the Top 20 on the iTunes History podcast chart.
