JUNE 11, 2021 (San Francisco, CA) – While the world is reawakening from the isolation brought on by the pandemic, Thievery Corporation’s ROB GARZA is ready to celebrate today, June 11, 2021, with a brand new single and debuting a brand new sound. A collaboration with critically-hailed Minneapolis band Enemy Planes, “Summer Is Ours” is an anthemic and soaring single that combines Enemy Planes’ indie rock sensibilities with Garza’s signature flourishes of lush, electronic textures.
“This song was written knee-deep in the pandemic in my old place in SF with Yësac from Enemy Planes while having some drinks and thinking about what life would be like when the world regained some sense of normalcy,” recalls Garza about the song’s genesis. “After all the isolation, we could only imagine the extra recklessness that would abound. We kept singing ‘Summer is ours, let’s throw it away, erase all our scars we’re floating away.’ There were lots of scars around us that we could feel everyone wanted to erase.”
While Thievery Corporation takes a much-needed respite from the road after 26 years of consecutive touring, Garza has been working diligently on his own new material. Following 2019’s successful debut EP Where the Moon Hides, “Summer Is Ours” marks his first new material since the release of the bossa nova-flavored Riviera Remix of the single “Deep Blue” last year.
“’Summer Is Ours’ was coproduced by my musical brothers SMLE, who helped me realize my favorite things from ’80s alt rock and modern electronic music,” explains Garza of the single’s surprisingly fresh direction. “I finally got my buddy Count (who has worked on Tycho, DJ Shadow, Jai Wolf and others’ records) to redo the drums and we felt like we all created something that encapsulated the spirit of the world opening up!”
“Summer Is Ours” is set for release on Garza’s own label, Magnetic Moon. With three electrifying artists already out of the gate, Magnetic Moon is commanding industry and media attention, including rapper ToBy who Under the Radar praised, “His smooth flow and the sunburnt trap beats set the backdrop for stories that range from reflections on Egyptian mythology to the tolls of excess and meditations on mortality,” Racquel Jones whosenew album IgnoRANT was called “as fierce as it is utterly unforgettable” by BlackBook Magazine, and indie rockers Forty Feet Tall whose new album A Good Distraction was called “one of the best records of 2021″ by New Noise Magazine. With Garza’s own material to add to the mix, Magnetic Moon is well on its way to taking its place in the indie label forefront.
