ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 18, 2016 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that shortstop Ruben Tejada (left quadriceps strain) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and that infielder Greg Garcia was optioned to Memphis (AAA) following yesterday’s win.
Tejada, 26, injured his quad in the team’s final Grapefruit League game on March 31 and began the 2016 season on the disabled list. The right-handed hitting shortstop was signed by the Cardinals as a free-agent on March 19 following his release by the New York Mets.
Tejada played in three games with Springfield (AA) last week (April 14-16) during an injury rehabilitation assignment and batted .333 (3-for-9) with a double.
The Cardinals have already employed three shortstops (Aledmys Diaz, Garcia, Jedd Gyorko) this season and Jhonny Peralta remains on the disabled list following surgery to repair the ligament in his left thumb.
Tejada wears uniform no. 19.
