The St. Louis Cardinals did the obvious on Wednesday; they exercised their $16MM club option on star Albert Pujols. They also announced that Trever Miller’s option had vested during the season, guaranteeing the pitcher $2MM.
$16MM for Pujols is an absolute steal, which the Cardinals are aware of. My gut is telling me that the Cards will bump that amount if/when an extension is agreed upon. If you figure Ryan Howard is commanding $25MM a season, Pujols is worth more. It’ll be interesteding to see how this all plays out.
Miller’s option was based on appearances, which he met in August. He’s the main LOOGY for the Cardinals and $2MM is about as much as you want to pay for that role.
