I recently finished The Mindless by Mark Bozon and came away with mixed, but generally positive, feelings. While the book ultimately delivered an intriguing and thought-provoking story, it took some time for me to fully get invested.

The first half of the novel was the biggest hurdle. The pacing felt slow, and I often found myself confused about what was happening and where the story was heading. Bozon drops readers into a world filled with mysteries and unanswered questions, which can be engaging, but at times it felt like there wasn’t quite enough information to stay grounded. I considered putting the book down more than once during those early chapters.

Fortunately, the second half pays off much of that initial investment. As the plot unfolds and the pieces begin to fit together, the story becomes much more compelling. The central ideas are fascinating and sparked a lot of thought long after I finished reading.

One of the things I enjoyed most was the book’s atmosphere and concepts. At various points, The Mindless reminded me of The Matrix, particularly in the way it explores questions about reality and perception. There were also shades of Inception mixed in, with its layered mysteries and the feeling that things may not be what they seem. Fans of either of those films will likely find elements here to appreciate.

While I enjoyed the story overall, I think a tighter first half and a clearer introduction to the book’s world would have made for a stronger reading experience. Still, the unique ideas and satisfying payoff kept me engaged enough to see it through.
