“It is undeniably honest, a howl from the darkness pleading for the light, and one that might resonate with anyone looking not for answers, but just for someone to let them know that in their darkest moments, they are never entirely alone.” – FOR THE RABBITS (Premiere)
Florida’s Tyler Costolo has returned to his Ghost Fan Club project with a self-titled EP, his first new GFC material since 2021. Costolo originally began making music under his own name in 2017 with what he describes as “haphazard folk songs.” He then adopted the Two Meters moniker and released two Bedroom Pop EPs before experimenting with heavier, more dissonant sounds for labels like Very Jazzed and Knifepunch Records.
Seeking an outlet to release material on the softer material, he debuted the Ghost Fan Club project in 2020. He released a handful of singles (including “Speak to Me” which became a minor TikTok hit), and the aching ‘Goodbye World, Hello Ghosts’ EP in 2021.
Costolo then found himself in flux, both personally and creatively, as he made his sonically harsh Metal-inspired return to the Two Meters name in 2022 while also working on the songs that would eventually become this Ghost Fan Club return EP.
While this new release sees him return to his Slowcore and Bedroom Pop influences, Ghost Fan Club has a new edge and greater urgency (thanks in part to the recruitment of Swim Camp’s Tom Morris on drums) as he tackles subjects like depression, grief, instability, and lost time. The ‘Ghost Fan Club’ EP features the acclaimed “Shoulders” and “Now and Then” singles, and is out now via Knifepunch Records, a gay working-class trans-run label.
“I wrote these songs during a point of major turmoil in my life. I was mostly drifting along, trying to make peace with so much of my existence being out of my control and time slipping by while I was trying to catch up. I started working on a lot of the songs all the way back in 2021 but wasn’t in a situation where I could comfortably record.
“I felt desperate to get the tracks finished but was bouncing around unable to find any footing, which I think you can feel in the songs themselves. I wanted actual drums for the first time in my music making journey which is where Tom Morris came in. I think that addition really makes a difference between these songs and my previous body of work.” – Tyler Costolo (Ghost Fan Club)
Praise for Ghost Fan Club’s Recent Singles:
“Poignantly explores the depths of the creator’s emotions. The EP is characterized by its imperfections and deftly balances musicality and authenticity. The upcoming July 5 release will move listeners and inspire them to join the club.” – THE POST
“Ghost Fan Club’s new EP is a testament to Costolo’s resilience and growth…finds a delicate balance between tender introspection and urgent expression, crafting an EP that resonates with the raw, unfiltered emotions of our time.” – BLOOD MAKES NOISE
“Sees him face his own inner sadness. It’s a blend of 90s indie rock with a bit of Modest Mouse and traces more recently of Alex G, a very contemplative and hypnotic take on the genre.” – WE ALL WANT SOMEONE TO SHOUT FOR
“Great.” – THE ALTERNATIVE
“Ghost Fan Club has managed to capture that magic here…I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone live a lyric so entirely in that moment.” – START-TRACK
“Ghost Fan Club‘s haunting vocals possess an ethereal quality that effortlessly conveys the depths of inner sadness, echoing the aches and pains of depression. With music that transcends the boundaries of mere melody and rhythm, they become a vessel through which the raw emotions of despair and melancholy are expressed with astonishing clarity and intensity.” – AMPLIFY THE NOISE
“A solemn listen, but one that begins to pull you within it as the track unwinds before you.” – AUSTIN TOWN HALL
“Returning to his roots in Slowcore and Bedroom Pop, Costolo injects Ghost Fan Club with a renewed vigor and urgency…Delving into themes of depression, grief, instability, and the passage of time, “Shoulders” encapsulates a deeply personal journey.” – PUREMZINE
“These are songs writ large with the emotions of their creator, in particular, there’s a sense of instability, a sonic exploration of time and opportunity passing you by.” – FOR THE RABBITS
“Songwriting not as a method of escape from dark emotions but a canvas upon which they might be laid out and examined from a new perspective.” – VARIOUS SMALL FLAMES
