2024 Cardinals Draft Tracker

The 2024 Cardinals Draft Tracker is live.

The 2024 MLB Draft is now completed and here is the tracker of draft picks. This will keep track of who signs with the Cardinals and for how much.

Here’s the details on the picks. Every pick in the first 10 rounds has an assigned slot value, with the total for each club’s slot value equaling what it can spend without a penalty. If a player in those rounds does not sign, his slot value gets subtracted from the team’s pool.Any player selected after the 10th round has a slot value of $150,000; anything over will count against the teams pool.

Teams that exceed their bonus pool are penalized. Clubs that exceed their allotment by 0-5% pay a 75% tax on the overage. Between 5-10%, teams lose a future first-round pick and are taxed 75%. Between 10-15%, teams lose a future first- and second-rounder with a 100% tax. Anything over 15% will cost a team 2 first-rounders and 100% tax.

The deadline to sign picks is August 1 at 4 PM CST; any college senior/5th year/graduate student can sign after that date.

• Tab A – Team Info: This lists the total picks, percentage sign, and pool information. I’ve added a column to track the amount of taxes a team is projected for pay on overages.
• Tab B – Picks: These are the actual picks with signing details.
• Tab C – Demographics: The draft broken down into where the Cardinals drafted from, by position, education level, and college.

Key:

• The Cardinals did not have a second round pick. Sonny Gray was a free agent that turned down a qualifying offer; the Cardinals forfeited the pick when they signed him.

Draft Facts:

• Teams have exceed their bonus pool 217 times out of 360 opportunities (60.3% of the time).
• 22 of 30 teams exceed the bonus pool in the 2023 draft.
• 0 teams have gone above the bonus pool by more than 5%.
• The Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, and Giants have exceeded their bonus pool every year.
• The Rockies and Twins have never exceeded their bonus pool.

• 7/22: Update 2: Baseball America has updated their database; I’ve added the following signings: Brian Holiday (3.80), Ryan Campos (4.109), Braden Davis (5.142), Josh Kross (6.171), Bryce Madron (10.291), Jon Jon Gazdar (11.321), Mason Burns (14.412), Sam Brodersen (15.441), Deniel Ortiz (16.471), Brandt Thompson (17.501), Christian Martin (18.531), Owen Rice (20.591). The Cardinals are now finished with their draft; they’ve signed 18 of 19 guys and have spent their full bonus pool, plus most of the 5% overage.
  Update 1: Some names have officially signed: JJ Wetherholt (1.7), Andrew Dutkanych IV (7.201), Jack Findlay (8.231), Cade McGee (9.261), Ian Petrutz (12.351), Nolan Sparks (13.381). All signed for above their slot value.
