JUPITER, Fla., March 16, 2023 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 47 players, with three players optioned to the Memphis (AAA) roster.
The team optioned pitcher Connor Thomas, catcher Ivan Herrera and outfielder Moises Gomez today, leaving 33 Major League roster players and 14 non-roster invitees on the Spring Training camp roster.

No surprises here. Thomas still has work to do and there are no rotations spots available. Herrera was destined for every day at bats at Memphis, while Andrew Knizner and Tres Barrera look to back up Willson Contreras.
Gomez is the most interesting player; he was one of the top prospects last season, but he’s been completely overshadowed by Jordan Walker. Gomez is older then Walker (which would normally help his cause), but Gomez didn’t help himself by slashing .242/.286/.303 this spring while Walker has hit everything he’s seen. He’ll be one of the first guys up when there’s an injury though.
With Tink Hence demoted yesterday, the Cardinals now have Walker and Masyn Winn as the best prospects still vying for a spot.
