JULY 27, 2022 (London, UK) — Following the release of the single “London Bridge” earlier this month via Cooking Vinyl and its accompanying video which has garnered considerable attention for its mesmerizing animation, Blur drummer DAVE ROWNTREE and artists CAUBOYZ are releasing a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. Brooklyn Vegan called the video “pretty cool” while MXDWN elaborates a bit more calling it “vibrant and mesmerizing and the moving shapes and rolling motion pair well with the song.” Northern Transmission describes the track as “Deceptively bright and upbeat, with its staccato ‘la-la-la-la’ hook line… the music belies a lyrical sense of dread. As proficient with a synth or guitar as he is behind the drum-kit, Rowntree’s innate ear for a melody is given free-reign on this scuzzy but impactful, lo-fi number.”
Dave Rowntree:
“I built some of the equipment and synthesisers that I have used for my new tracks and Cauboyz DIY approach really appealed to me. Their process of making cut out paper shapes and objects that are then animated by hand made machinery is incredible and I was keen to work with them to come up with an idea for ‘London Bridge’.”
Cauboyz quote:
‘As soon as we listened to London Bridge, we interpreted it as the story of an ever-moving journey. The rhythm expresses a continuous forward movement and we wanted the installation to physically suggest this sensation.
So that’s how we got the idea of using rolls of paper that would evolve and change as the song progresses.
We used five rolls of paper to create different scenes. They move at different speeds and directions allowing us to accentuate the feeling of movement.
We also wanted to bring out the mood of the song by using strong geometric shapes and a visually abstract dimension. The scenes get more and more surreal as it unfolds.
We drew the designs for the decors, some figurative; some abstract; and then we sent them to be digitally printed and we assembled them ourselves. At the same time, we designed and built a machine that would power the rolls’
Cauboys are three French artists: Bertrand Jamot – photographer, Philippe Tytgat – graphic designer and Aurélien Zavattiero – architect who are interested in typography, graphic design, modern photography, contemporary art, cinema and music.
Our music video “Dream” for a band named Husbands was our first big break in 2013. It was a DIY project with light boxes illuminating typographic treatments of the lyrics; created without any help from a computer.
We love working with our hands and thinking about how to show things more creatively through typography, photography and live installations.

As well as seasoned multi-instrumentalist and the longstanding drummer of one of Britain’s most successful bands, Dave’s also something of a polymath. A film and TV composer (credits include Netflix series The One and the BBC technological crime thriller The Capture), podcaster, light aircraft pilot (and instructor), lawyer, and former Labor councilor.
“I’m really excited to release my first single as a solo artist,” he concludes. “It’s from a body of work that I’ve been putting together over the last couple of years, and I’m humbled to be releasing it on the legendary Cooking Vinyl label.”
