ADAM WAINWRIGHT RETURNS FROM COVID IL; OUTFIELDER AUSTIN DEAN OPTIONED TO MEMPHIS (AAA)
ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 3, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s series opener with the New York Mets that they have activated pitcher Adam Wainwright from the COVID-19 IL and optioned outfielder Austin Dean to Memphis (AAA). Wainwright, who went on the IL on April 29, is set to make his sixth start of the season tonight, appearing in his 399th career game.
Wainwright (0-3, 4.08) is coming off the 25th complete game performance of his career on April 26, and is two strikeouts shy of 1,000 at Busch Stadium III.
Dean has appeared in 18 games to begin the season, with 11 of his 34 plate appearances coming as a pinch-hitter. He has started four games this year, the last on April 20.
