Beer Review: Toppling Goliath’s PseudoSue

I recently received a load of beer from in-laws in Milwaukee; they tracked down a few I was looking for, and threw PseudoSue in based off the recommendation of the beer shop guy. It’s an American Pale Ale by Toppling Goliath Brewing Company in Iowa.

Instantly I was drew into the cool label and the fact it was an APA. That wasn’t even the best part though.

ABV: 5.80%
IBU: 50
Style: American Pale Ale
Brewery Description: This single hop pale ale showcases the Citra hop for a well balanced beer that is delicate in body with a mild bitterness in the finish. She roars with ferocious aromas of grapefruit, citrus, mango and evergreen. pseudoSue’s unique and addictive taste is clean and bright with just enough bite!

Appearance: This was poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass. It appeared a pale orange, hazy, and had a finger of off-white head. The head slowly receded and had a little lacing.

Smell: The primary aromas are citrus and pine, but you get hints of grapefruit, mango, and caramel as well. It’s a very sweet smell.

Taste: The citrus and pine are front and center on this. You get hints of earthy tastes along with some of the malt.

Mouth: Medium body and carbonation with a little bit of a hoppy aftertaste; for those that don’t like bitter beers, it won’t overpower you.

Overall: This ranks as one of my favorite APAs. It’s easy to drink and something that I’d pick up on a regular basis, if they sold it in St. Louis.

The Beer Advocate score is 100 (World Class) and the Bros haven’t scored it; it’s currently #29 on their Top 250. Untappd has it as 4.39 with over 21,000 rankings.

Score: 5 Empty Pints (the perfect beer)
