### The Fancestor: Fans of the Detroit Tigers

John Marlatt joins the Fancestor to discuss his lifelong fandom for the Detroit
Tigers. John shared his journey from childhood memories listening to Ernie Harwell
on WJR radio with his grandmother to becoming a devoted fan of the 1984 World Series
champions led by [Alan Trammell](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/trammal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br)
and [Kirk Gibson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoki01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br).

They discussed watching [Cecil Fielder](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fieldce01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br)‘
s home run prowess and the historic 2006 AL pennant-winning season that rekindled
his passion for following every game. The conversation covered the heartbreak of
multiple playoff losses, including the 2012 World Series against the San Francisco
Giants and the controversial imperfect perfect game in 2010.

John reflected on the pitching legends he’s witnessed including [Justin Verlander](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br),
[Max Scherzer](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br),
and [Tarik Skubal](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/skubata01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-30_br),
while explaining why he remains a dedicated Tigers fan despite the team’s struggles
over the decades.

The Fancestor is a podcast about that will speak to 30 fans from 30 Major League
Baseball teams to determine exactly why we are fans. Through interesting conversations,
it strives to understand and explain fandom: how we became fans, the moments that
tested our fandom and why – at the end of the day – we are still fans.
