[Hancel Rincon](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=rincon000han&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br)
is a right-handed relief pitcher recently promoted to the St. Louis Cardinals roster.
A former starting pitcher, Rincon improved significantly after transitioning to
the bullpen, where his strikeout potential increased and his pitch profile played
up.

His pitch arsenal features a mid-90s fastball alongside a strong changeup and sharp
slider. While control and command inconsistencies remain a concern, Rincon has the
potential to develop into a valuable high-leverage setup reliever in Major League
Baseball.

The [Cardinals](https://www.mlb.com/cardinals) have announced that Hancel Rincon
is the second player being added to their expanded roster ([Leo Bernal](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bernal000leo&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br)
being the first; [scouting report here](https://www.nyrdcast.com/2026/09/scouting-report-leonardo-bernal/)).
The relief pitcher has the potential to be a back of the bullpen arm after seeing
his stuff improve with a move from the rotation.

Prior to the season, I ranked him the [#28 prospect in the system](https://www.nyrdcast.com/2026/02/2026-top-50-cardinals-prospects-26-50/);
he was a spot ahead of [Luis Gastelum](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gastelu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br).

## Player Profile

**Name:** Hancel Rincon
**Position:** RHP**Bats/Throws:** Right/Right**Height/Weight:**
6’2″, 160 lbs**Born:** April 28, 2002**Hometown:** San Jose de los Llanos, Dominican
Republic**Current Level:** [MLB – Promoted Sept 1](https://www.nyrdcast.com/2026/09/cardinals-announce-roster-additions/)

### Overall Grade: 45 FV

Rincón isn’t a traditional top-100 prospect, but he has quietly developed into one
of the more interesting pitching stories in the Cardinals system. Originally a starter,
he took a significant step forward after moving into a relief role, allowing his
stuff to play up. Scouts praise the quality of his secondary pitches, particularly
his changeup and slider.

---

## Pitch Arsenal

### Fastball: 55

 * Sits around **94-96 mph**, touching higher in short bursts.
 * Plays better out of the bullpen than it did as a starter.
 * Can miss bats at the top of the zone.
 * Some command inconsistency keeps it from grading higher.

### Changeup: 60

 * Generally viewed as his best pitch.
 * Generates swings and misses against left-handed hitters.
 * Good arm speed and late dive.
 * Capable of being a legitimate out pitch.

### Slider: 55

 * Above-average offering with sharp late movement.
 * Effective against right-handed hitters.
 * Gives him a second swing-and-miss weapon.

### Command: 45

 * Walk rate remains the biggest question.
 * Career progression shows improvement, but commands the zone more effectively
   in stretches than consistently.
 * If control improves even modestly, his profile jumps significantly.

---

## Statistical Indicators

In Triple-A Memphis during 2026:

 * **71.1 IP**
 * **4.04 ERA**
 * **88 strikeouts**
 * Approximately **30% strikeout rate**
 * 95 mph average fastball
 * Multi-inning relief role after conversion from starting.

The strikeout production is what stands out most. His whiff rates and ability to
miss bats improved noticeably once he stopped pacing himself as a starter.

---

## Strengths

 * Swing-and-miss changeup
 * Above-average slider
 * Fastball velocity ticked up in relief
 * Can work more than one inning
 * Strong strikeout numbers throughout upper minors

## Weaknesses

 * Lean frame raises durability questions
 * Control can waver
 * Not an elite velocity arm compared to premium late-inning relievers
 * Home-run susceptibility at times when behind in counts

---

# MLB Comparisons

**Best-Case Comp: Luis Garcia (Angels/Astros version)**

 * Fastball in the mid-90s.
 * Relies on quality secondary pitches.
 * Not overpowering solely with velocity.
 * Success comes from deception and pitch mix.

**Realistic Comp: [JoJo Romero](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/romerjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br)**

 * Multiple effective pitches.
 * Can work leverage innings.
 * Strikeout ability with occasional command lapses.
 * More valuable than traditional middle relievers.

**Ceiling Comp: [Hector Neris](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nerishe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br)**

 * Plus changeup carrying the profile.
 * Enough fastball to set up the secondary stuff.
 * Could become a late-inning arm if command sharpens.

**Floor Comp: [Génesis Cabrera](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cabrege01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-09-01_br)**

 * Electric stuff flashes.
 * Inconsistent strike throwing limits role.
 * Shuttles between leverage and middle relief.

---

## Cardinals Outlook

I view Rincón as a future 6th/7th inning reliever with a chance to develop into
a setup man. The conversion to relief appears to have unlocked his best attributes:
a quality changeup, useful slider, and enough fastball velocity to miss bats. The
command likely prevents a closer projection, but there is a realistic path to becoming
a valuable bullpen piece in St. Louis over the next few seasons.

**Projected MLB line:** 3.50-4.00 ERA, 25-30% K rate, high-leverage setup reliever.
