Nearly two decades after its initial 2008 CD release, Nerf Herder’s fan-favorite comeback album IV has finally received its long-overdue debut on wax. Released via Oglio Entertainment, this first-ever vinyl pressing treats the Santa Barbara geek-rock pioneers to a physical presentation that matches the catchy, crunchy joy of the music itself.

The Context: The Classic Lineup Returns

When IV originally dropped, it marked a major milestone for the band: the reunion of the classic trio—Parry Gripp, Charlie Dennis, and Steve Sherlock. Rather than leaning purely on nostalgia, the album proved that the original lineup’s songwriting chemistry was as sharp, funny, and melodic as it was during their late-’90s Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme-song heyday.

Sound & Musical Highlights

IV stands out in Nerf Herder’s discography for balancing self-deprecating nerd humor with unstoppable power-pop hooks.

Many pop punk bands that start out writing songs about video games, awkwardness, and pop culture often either abandon the schtick entirely or sound like they’re trying too hard to stay 19 forever. IV works so well because Gripp and company leaned into a specific kind of self-aware maturity. The album isn’t about being an awkward teenager anymore; it’s often about the funny, slightly depressing reality of being an awkward adult who still hasn’t outgrown those things.

Listening to IV today feels like stepping into a time capsule of ’00s internet and nerd culture. Written just before social media completely reshaped fandom, the pop-culture references feel cozy and hyper-specific rather than algorithmically generated. It captures a time when being a “nerd” was still somewhat marginalized, making the band’s unshakeable affection for rock history, bad movies, and high school slights feel earnest rather than cynical.

Compared to their major-label debut or the slicker production of American Psycho, IV has a leaner, punchier DIY energy. The guitars sound wide and natural, Steve Sherlock’s drumming hits hard without sounding overly quantized or sample-replaced, and the whole record breathes like a real room full of guys cranking Weezer-esque guitar riffs through vintage amps.

Spinning the record highlights just how well these tracks translate to dynamic analog sound:

  • “Oh Me, Oh My” & “Golfshirt Pt. 2”: Direct, punchy openers that set the tone with buzzing guitars and Parry Gripp’s signature nasal, endearing vocals.
  • “Led Zeppelin Rules”: A standout track that captures the band’s knack for turning goofy, relatable pop-culture worship into a triumphant arena-punk singalong.
  • “High School Reunion” & “The Backpack Song”: Mid-album gems where the humor cuts close to home, mixing classic high-school awkwardness with infectious power-pop chord progressions.

Packaging & Presentation

Oglio Records pulled out the stops for collectors and longtime fans:

  • Vinyl Variant: Pressed on a vibrant Emerald Green wax that looks fantastic under turntable lights.
  • Inner Sleeve: Includes a full printed lyric sleeve, allowing fans to finally read along with every absurd, hilarious line.
  • Autographed Options: Select pre-orders direct from the band offer signed jackets for die-hard fans.

The Verdict: 4.5 / 5

Fans have been waiting for this vinyl release and it’s been worth the wait. The album is catchy and lighthearted; the sound quality is amazing. Whether you’ve been spinning the original CD since 2008 or are discovering this era of Nerf Herder for the first time, this reissue is an absolute must-have piece of pop-punk history.

Note: Big thanks to the folks at Oglio Records for sending over a review copy of the vinyl! As always, all opinions here are honest and uninfluenced.
