from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher [Juan Carlos García](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=garcia032jua&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br).
Rivera made his Major League debut in 2026, recording ten strikeouts and a 6.30
ERA over ten innings pitched across four games.

Standing 6-foot-7, Rivera features a high-velocity fastball and a high strikeout
rate alongside ongoing command issues. During the 2026 season, he posted a 2.59
ERA in the minor leagues, projecting as a potential mid-rotation starter or multi-
inning bullpen reliever depending on his control development.

**ST. LOUIS, MO., November 3, 2026** – The [St. Louis Cardinals](https://www.mlb.com/cardinals)
announced today that they have acquired left-handed pitcher **_[Eduardo Rivera](https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rivered01,rivera003edu&search=Eduardo+Rivera&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br)_**
from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher **_[Juan Carlos García](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=garcia032jua&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br)_**.

Rivera, 23, is a 6-foot-7, 237-pound southpaw from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Originally
an 11^(th) round selection by the Oakland Athletics in the 2021 MLB Draft out of
C.A.D.E.S.T. (Colegio Acelerado de Educacion Secundaria y Tecnica) in Carolina,
Puerto Rico, Rivera made his Major League debut at Fenway Park in Boston on April
22, 2026 against the New York Yankees.

Rivera began his Major League career with 7.0 scoreless innings over his first two
appearances and did not allow a hit to a left-handed batter until his fourth MLB
appearance, a single to [Dylan Beavers](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beavedy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br)
of the Orioles. Rivera stymied opposing left-handed batters, allowing just one hit
in 15 at-bats (.067 BA) with Boston and has not allowed a home run in his minor
league career while facing a total of 355 left-handed batters.

Over his four Major League appearances in 2026, including three starts, Rivera was
0-1 with a 6.30 ERA averaging a strikeout per inning over 10.0 innings pitched.
In 26 minor league appearances and five starts between Portland (AA) and Worcester(
AAA) in 2026, Rivera was 7-2 with a 2.59 ERA, striking out 71 over 55.2 innings.

Rivera began his professional career as an 18-year-old in the Athletics’ Arizona
Complex League and moved up to High-A Lansing before he was acquired by the Red
Sox as a minor league free agent in June 2024. Rivera ascended through the Red Sox
organization making 32 appearances, starting 22 games over the next 22 months culminating
in his MLB debut in 2026.

Entering the 2026 season, Rivera was ranked as the No. 18 prospect in the Red Sox
organization by MLB.com. Over 267.2 minor league innings, Rivera has averaged 11
strikeouts per 9 innings pitched.

García, an 18-year-old right hander out of Montemorelos, Mexico, pitched the last
two seasons for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals, going 6-6 with a 3.87 ERA
in 23 games.

The Cardinals acquired Rivera, a 23-year-old left-hander with a high-upside, high-
risk arm whose combination of size, velocity, and strikeout ability makes him an
intriguing project for the Cardinals’ pitching development group.

#### Overview

 * Age: 23
 * Throws: Left
 * Height: 6’7″
 * MLB Experience: 4 appearances (3 starts) in 2026
 * MLB Stats: 10 IP, 6.30 ERA, 10 K
 * AAA/AA Stats (2026): 55.2 IP, 2.59 ERA, 71 K

Rivera’s appeal starts with his physicality. At 6-foot-7, he creates difficult angles
for hitters and generates excellent extension. The raw stuff is major league caliber.
The issue has been command. He struck out hitters at an elite rate in the minors
but also battled inconsistent control.

---

#### Pitch Grades (20-80 Scale)

| Pitch | Grade | **Velocity** | Notes |
| Fastball | 65 | 94-96, touches 99 | Mid-90s velocity with downhill angle. Can touch upper-90s. Misses bats and generates weak contact when located. Best pitch. |
| Slider | 60 | 84-87, touches 88 | Best secondary pitch. Sharp late break and primary strikeout offering. |
| Changeup | 45 | 86-89, touches 90 | Flashes average but remains inconsistent. Still developing against right-handed hitters. |
| Control | 40 | | Biggest weakness. Walk rate and command within the zone need improvement. |
| Command | 35 |  | Struggles to consistently spot pitches. |
| Overall Future Value | 50 |  | Potential mid-rotation starter or high-leverage reliever if command doesn’t progress. |

These grades are estimates based on public scouting information describing a “big
fastball,” mid-90s velocity, swing-and-miss slider, and ongoing control issues.

There are also reports of a 89-91 MPH cutter, but it projects to be fringe pitch
at best. It’s not necessary for him to be successful.

---

#### Strengths

 * **Velocity from the Left Side:** There aren’t many 6-foot-7 lefties throwing
   in the mid-90s. Rivera immediately becomes one of the organization’s hardest-
   throwing left-handed pitching prospects.
 * **Strikeout Ability:** He struck out 71 batters in 55.2 minor league innings
   during 2026, demonstrating legitimate bat-missing stuff.
 * **Deception: **The combination of extension, angle, and arm speed makes his pitches
   play harder than the radar gun indicates. Right-handers often struggle to pick
   up the ball.

#### Weaknesses

 * **Command:** This is the entire development story. Rivera walked 12.7% of batters
   in the minors and issued six walks in his 10 MLB innings.
 * **Health:** He finished 2026 on the injured list with a lumbar strain. While
   not considered a major long-term concern, durability remains something to watch
   with a pitcher of his size.
 * **Third Pitch: **The changeup currently trails the fastball and slider. Without
   improvement here, some scouts may eventually view him as a bullpen arm. Based
   on publicly reported pitch characteristics, his development hinges on either
   sharpening the changeup or significantly improving command.

### MLB Comparisons

 1. **[Andrew Miller](https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=millean01,miller028and,miller029and,miller030and,miller016and&search=Andrew+Miller&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br):**
    The size, left-handed velocity, and dominant slider immediately bring to mind a
    young Andrew Miller. Like Miller early in his career, Rivera’s future may ultimately
    depend on whether he can throw enough strikes to remain in a rotation.
 2. **[A.J. Puk](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pukaj01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br):**
    Former Cardinal executive Chaim Bloom knows this profile well. Rivera resembles
    A.J. Puk: huge frame, premium fastball, wipeout breaking ball, and inconsistent
    command. Puk eventually found success after moving into more flexible pitching
    roles.
 3. **[Hoby Milner](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/milneho01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.nyrdcast.com&utm_campaign=2026-11-03_br)
    with More Velocity: **A less obvious but realistic Cardinals-specific comparison.
    Rivera possesses more raw stuff than Hoby Milner, but a similar deceptive angle
    from the left side. If command improves, Rivera’s ceiling is significantly higher.

---

#### Projection

 * **Best Case:** No. 3 starter capable of:
    - 150+ innings
    - Mid-3.00 ERA
    - Above-average strikeout rate
 * **Most Likely Outcome:** Multi-inning bullpen weapon who can:
    - Work 1-3 innings at a time
    - Miss bats late in games
    - Serve as a matchup nightmare against left-handed hitters
 * **Worst Case:** Command never develops enough to stick on a major league roster
   consistently.

---

For the acquisition cost of an 18-year-old DSL pitcher, this is exactly the kind
of lottery-ticket arm the Cardinals should be targeting. Rivera has legitimate major
league stuff, and if the Cardinals’ pitching group can improve his strike throwing
even modestly, he has a chance to become a useful big-league contributor.
