Say Anything revisits one of the band’s most beloved songs with the release of “Do Betterer,” a reimagined version of the 2009 fan favorite “Do Better,” available July 23. Stream it HERE.
Originally featured on Say Anything’s acclaimed self-titled fourth album, “Do Better” remains one of the five most-streamed songs in the band’s catalog. Now reimagined as “Do Betterer,” the track transforms the original into a lush, dream-pop interpretation that offers an entirely new perspective while preserving the emotional core that made it a favorite.
The release also marks the first in what may become a series of fresh takes on songs from the Say Anything catalog, giving listeners a new way to experience some of the band’s most enduring material. Bemis shared, “While thinking about these upcoming shows, I experimented with a new arrangement of our song ‘Do Better.’ As I performed it, I found myself relating the lyrics to my current emotional state and to the world around us. I realized that by imbuing the song with a new perspective and new meaning, I could, at the very least, for once, give my poor dad a fucking break.”
The accompanying artwork for “Do Betterer” also pays tribute to the original release, featuring an updated interpretation of the iconic cover art from Say Anything’s 2009 self-titled album.
Following the release of “Do Betterer,” Bemis will head out on a series of intimate Storyteller performances that blend live music with the stories, inspirations, and personal experiences behind the songs. More than traditional solo shows, the shows offer attendees a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of alternative rock’s most celebrated songwriters. Bemis will also host a series of Instagram Live sessions where fans can hear songs he’ll likely perform on the road, and revisit favorites from the Say Anything catalog.
Bemis explains, “When I talk, especially about my art, I tend to ‘let people in’ to an alarming extent, while somehow generating new layers of fun confusion for those who care to pick apart. Because of that, I’ve always wanted to fuse playing songs with discussing the process and intentions that led me to create them. We’re going to talk about the literal and philosophical elements of Say Anything songs in between playing them, kind of like some bizarre, live, musical punk podcast. Hopefully people walk away inspired and emotionally purged, having laughed a lot and tripped a bit of balls in the process.”
Coinciding with this busy new chapter, Bemis has officially relaunched his beloved Song Shop, a platform that allows listeners to commission original songs and personalized experiences directly from one of alternative rock’s most distinctive voices. Originally launched in 2008, Song Shop offers custom-written songs inspired by fans’ own stories. Bemissongstream also features one-on-one Zoom sessions with live custom songwriting, personalized video messages, private performances, and other unique experiences.
