NYC’s Frenchy and the Punk Turn Urgency Into Art on “War on War”

Frenchy and the Punk’s new single combines rhythm & resistance

Frenchy and the Punk deliver a jolt of tension and momentum with “War on War” – a single that feels wired for both the stage and the moment. Issued via Distortion Productions, the track doesn’t ease its way in; it pulses forward with a sense of unease that quickly becomes addictive. There is a lived-in grit to the sound, giving it character and bite rather than a glossy finish.

What makes the song especially striking is how expansive it feels despite its stripped-down origins. Samantha Stephenson and Scott Helland operate with a near telepathic connection, turning voice, percussion, and guitar into something far more immersive than the sum of its parts. Stephenson’s delivery cuts through with clarity and force, while Helland’s playing shifts between jagged accents and atmospheric swells, creating a push and pull that keeps the track constantly evolving.

Musically, “War on War” thrives on contrast. Rhythms surge and recede, melodies hook the listener before dissolving into darker textures, and electronic elements subtly thread everything together. The mix, crafted by William Faith, preserves that dynamic tension, allowing each element space while maintaining a cohesive, driving core. It is a sound that feels equally rooted in post-punk tradition and open to broader sonic exploration.

Visually, the accompanying video takes a restrained but purposeful approach. Instead of overwhelming the viewer, it leans into mood and suggestion, using carefully chosen imagery to echo the track’s emotional weight. The result is something intimate yet unsettling, drawing attention to the themes without spelling them out too directly.

Beneath its immediate impact, the song carries a wider reflection on division, influence, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. It does not preach, but it does provoke, leaving room for interpretation while maintaining a clear sense of urgency. In doing so, “War on War” stands as a compelling snapshot of where Frenchy and the Punk are right now—focused, inventive, and fully in command of their voice.

Samantha Stephenson shares, “This song is not only about war but also the deterioration of truth and destruction of progress. It’s the belief that the majority of people in this country and the world do not want to go backwards and do not want to see bloodshed. It is the frustration that the few, fueled by greed and lust for power, who manipulate for their and their cronies’ advantage, cause such grief and destruction for the many. It is a call to voice opposition to the chaos and insanity. It is a call for unity beyond borders.”

A veteran of the US hardcore punk scene, Scott Helland has spent years honing a dynamic, high-impact performance style that now drives Frenchy and the Punk’s electrifying live presence and genre-blurring sound. Over the course of his music career, he has shared the stage with Black Flag, Husker Du, GBH, C.O.C, Agnostic Front and CroMags, in addition to performing with Dinosaur Jr. on occasion.

Samantha’s artistic expression came from a completely different place, having started in dance, piano and the visual arts. These two worlds collided forming a musical incarnation that moves effortlessly from bombastic and driving songs to atmospheric and almost transcendent soundscapes.

‘War On War’ is out everywhere digitally, including Apple MusicSpotify and Bandcamp. There you can also find their critically acclaimed albums ‘Midnight Garden’ (2024) and ‘Zen Ghost’ (2022).
