MISSOULA—the instrumental project from drummer Brooks Wackerman (Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Religion) and guitarist John Konesky (Tenacious D)—release their new single “Crimson” this Wednesday, April 29, offering the clearest picture yet of what this collaboration actually is: two lifers locking in and seeing how far they can push it without saying a word.

The track is the official lead single from their debut album Death Doula, out June 26.

If the earlier release “Love Bombs” hinted at the project’s direction, “Crimson” sharpens it. The song leans heavier and more deliberate, built on Konesky’s fluid, almost narrative-style guitar lines and Wackerman’s instinctive, hard-hitting precision behind the kit. It moves more like a score than a traditional rock single—structured, dynamic, and constantly shifting without losing its grip.

There are no vocals here—no hooks to fall back on—just interplay. What makes Death Doula work is how locked-in it feels. Wackerman doesn’t overplay, Konesky doesn’t wander, and the result is something that’s technical without turning into a flex.

Across the album, the duo moves between dense, riff-driven passages and more open, melodic stretches, but everything stays intentional. Nothing feels tossed off. It’s the sound of two players with serious range choosing restraint over excess—and hitting harder because of it.

MISSOULA isn’t a side project in the casual sense. Death Doula plays like a fully realized statement—focused, deliberate, and built on years of instinct.

Konesky explains, “Missoula is what happens when you take the reins off and let yourself run free, naked and fearless, thru an infinite universe.”

  • That's a really interesting way to describe it – the idea of two experienced musicians just building something together silently is quite compelling.
