Cardinals Announce Series of Roster Moves: Bader, Flaherty, Naile, Capel

JACK FLAHERTY & HARRISON BADER PLACED ON INJURED LIST; ROOKIE & MISSOURI NATIVE JAMES NAILE & ROOKIE CONNER CAPEL PROMOTED FROM MEMPHIS (AAA)

ST. LOUIS, MO., June 27, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon several roster moves in advance of their series opener with Miami.

The team announced that right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty (right shoulder strain) has been placed on the 15-day Injured List and outfielder Harrison Bader (right foot planter fasciitis) on the 10-day Injured List.

The team also announced that rookie right-handed pitcher James Naile and rookie outfielder Conner Capel have both been selected from the Memphis (AAA) roster.

Naile (pronounced nayl) & Capel (pronounced KAY-pel) would become the 10th and 11th Cardinals players to make a Major League debut this season, 2nd to only Pittsburgh (12).

In 27 games (three starts) for Memphis this season, Naile is 3-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched. A Southeast Missouri native, Naile, 29, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2015 (20th round) out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He signed with the Cardinals as a minor league free-agent last November after seven seasons (2015-21) in the Athletics farm system.

The 6-3, 190-pound Naile has enjoyed a solid month of June, striking out 15 in 18.0 IP with just one walk for a 0.82 WHIP in eight games (two starts). His career mark in the minors stands at 43-33 with a 4.07 ERA in 197 games and 93 games started. The Charleston, MO High School graduate was named a Pacific Coast League All-Star in 2018 while pitching for Nashville (AAA).

Capel, 25, was acquired by the Cardinals in July of 2018 in a trade with Cleveland. The left-handed hitting outfielder, whose father Mike Capel was a Major League pitcher with the Cubs (1988), Brewers (1990) and Astros (1991), was batting .271 with 9 HR’s, 27 RBI, 16 SB’s and a .827 OPS in 58 games with Memphis this season. The 6-0, 195-pound Katy, Texas native has played all three outfield positions at Memphis this season, making the majority of his starts in right field.

Naile will wear uniform no. 68 and Capel no. 71.
