Beer Review: Narrow Gauge OJ Run

Narrow Gauge has been receiving a lot of notariety recently, being called one of the top 6 craft breweries to visit in the Midwest and the #6 new brewery in 2017 according to USA Today.

The brewery is known for their hoppy style of beers, mainly Pale Ales and IPAs. I recently tried a few different ones, and my favorite beer was OJ Run, an Imperial IPA.

ABV: 8.60%
IBU: 70
Style: IPA – Imperial/Double
Brewery Description: Imperial IPA dry hopped with Citra, Galaxy, and Amarillo.

Narrow Gauge OJ Run
Your only options for this are on tap at Narrow Gauge or in crowlers/growlers. I poured it into a standard pint glass. Unfortunately, it’s not available at this moment.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy yellow with an inch of head, which dissipates quickly. There was decent amount of lacing left on the glass. It almost looks like orange juice when poured.

Smell: Citrus is the primary smell; orange is primary, but pineapple and other tropical fruits are present. It really doesn’t have the piney smell you get with a lot of other IPAs.

Taste: The citrus is the main taste, like the smell. Orange is prominent, but so are the other tropical fruits; these flavors give it a very sweet taste. There is little hop taste that you expect with an DIPA (or even a single IPA).

Mouth: It’s light, especially for the style; which means it’ll sneak up on you quickly. It would be very easy to drink this and think session IPA, but after a crowler, you’d be feeling good.

Overall: This might have bumped Zombie Dust and Jai Alai as my favorite beer; it’s also more readily available for people in the STL area.

The Beer Advocate score is N/A (not enough reviews) and the Bros haven’t scored it either. Untappd has an average ranking of 4.40 in 1559 rankings.
