The Last Jedi Preview and Speculation

Monday night, Lucas Films released the second trailer to Star Wars: The Last Jedi during Monday Night Football. The trailer showed a lot of good clips and gave some new information.

This is the newest trailer with the first trailer attached after it.

We learn that Rey might be one of the 2 most powerful Force users since Return of the Jedi; the other was Ben Solo/Kylo Ren.  My guess is Luke won’t train her because he failed with Ben; in essence, he’s the last Jedi because he’s the only one with the knowledge of the Jedi.  That fact could be the reason Rey appears to work with Kylo Ren at the end of the preview; she needs someone to teach her about the Force.

(As an aside, read the Marvel Comics Star Wars series along with Heir to the Jedi to get a glimpse of what he’s learned)

There appears to be a large space battle when Kylo Ren could destroy his mother aboard a ship; it appears that he is struggling with the idea, which he appeared to struggle with before killing his father.  It would have been the way to write Leia out of the story, but it wouldn’t have the same impact as Han’s death since it’s already been done.  I also feel that Leia will somehow be the redemption of Ben, possibly through her death at the hands of the First Order.

When the Jedi temple is destroyed, the First Order appears to be there; you see Phasma walking through the rubble.  Phasma was a missed opportunity in the Force Awakens and hopefully she will have more of an impact in this episode; we get to see she has a duel with Finn during the movie.

I think there will be a lot of misdirection in what we just saw.  If you don’t see the character actually say the lines, it could be something to throw fans off.  Snoke’s voiceover could be directed at Kylo Ren, or it could be directed at Rey.  Rey could be asking Kylo Ren to train her, or she could be asking Luke.  It’s hard to tell without seeing the actual scene.
